Protect The Kids With Link

We are now in the digital age and one thing is for sure, there is no slowing it down. We are also so entrenched in our daily lives that we keep the young ones busy with digital content, be it on our phones, mobile tablets, TVs, or PCs. As we know, the internet is a plethora of information, but can also be very dangerous and perverted place.

From Teleraph.co.uk

Now there comes the question of how we keep these young inquisitive minds safe from the perverted information aplenty on the  internet, or how we manage what and when they consume. This is where apps like Google’s Family Link comes into play.

According to Google, Family Link at the time of this article, will only

  • Manage the apps your kid can use – Approve or block the apps your kid wants to download from the Google Play store.

  • Keep an eye on screen time – See how much time your kid spends on their favourite apps with weekly or monthly activity reports, and set daily screen time limits.

  • Set device bedtime – Remotely lock your kid’s device when it’s time for bed, or time to take a break.

Unfortunately, Family Link doesn’t filter or block content, but with these three features, you can control how the youngsters view and use the internet.

To use Family Link, the kid’s device has to be an android, but you can control the access of said android device from an IPhone or Android device. Please visit here to read more about this nifty tool.

We at thecomputerpotato think technology like this is very much needed as we go forward, and will be looking forward to seeing more and more tools like this to keep kids from the horror and perversion, until they are old enough that is.

Google Cardboard Will Transform Your View!

It seems there can’t be any week the technology giant Google couldn’t make itself known to the world with its innovations or news. Well they are hard at work again and we must give credit to whom it’s due.

The Computer Potato chose to bring you this news because Google is competing for the benefit of the common man or woman. This time the research is for you to experience virtual reality with just a piece of cardboard and your smart phone without spending a fortune.

How it works: Google says all you need is to “Get it, fold it and look inside to enter the world of Cardboard. It’s a VR experience starting with a simple viewer anyone can build or buy. Once you have it, you can explore a variety of apps that unfold all around you.”

Meet Raffi! The Camel With A View!

Google never seizes to amaze us. They are willing to do almost anything to get their tech up to scratch.

Google wanted to give us a view of the Liwa Oasis—the largest oasis in the Arabian peninsula. The solution they chose was to place their famous Trekker (an all angle camera used to take images for the Google Maps) on a camel and get it to walk around the desert.

Google Said “To bring this stunning desert to Street View, we fashioned the Trekker to rest on a camel, which gathered imagery as it walked. Using camels for the collection allowed us to collect authentic imagery and minimize our disruption of this fragile environment.”

Conclusion: Google is a technology giant as of the date of this article. This tells us all why they are — they give everything they got to get  what they want. An advice to any business in this new age!

Video Chat With A Doctor? Google Trials!

We are all aware Google is a giant in internet technologies, but not many know that google is looking into many other technologies to make life easy in the future. We have seen Google funding researches into driverless cars, robotics e.t.c

Now the technology giant has said it will be venturing into providing video chat services between doctors and people searching for diagnosis on the internet. This service – already being tested – will help thousands avoid misdiagnosing themselves. Google has said it will pay for the video chat services during the trial, but when it does go live patients, will have to pay for their appointments.

This can be a very important and beneficial service, as many people panic themselves by searching for symptoms on the internet, sometimes misdiagnosing and even self prescribing the wrong medicine.  Not to mention it might turn out cheaper for the patients than actually going to a clinic.

Project Ara Will Change Everything!

Fancy making your own phone? Yeah, you read right, make your own phone. Not to worry you will not be buying your own factory to create the phone, rather you will be able to customise your own phone thanks to a project named Project Ara by Google. Project Ara is looking to provide a build-your-own smartphone with which users can mix and match features themselves. Users will get an empty phone frame with a screen, and can add or remove modular parts of the handset to make up the phone of your dreams. You don’t get it? Think of it as a Lego box and from the pieces you are making a fully functional phone.

History; Project Ara was started by Google subsidiary Motorola Mobility with the goal of offering a highly customizable smartphone based on open hardware. Motorola Mobility was later acquired by Lenovo, but Google retained the Project Ara effort, which is now part of the company’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) division.

Production; Google has said the snap-on modules (or Lego like bricks) will be mass-produced via 3D printing. 3D Systems is Google’s exclusive printing partner for Project Ara. 3D Systems has said Project Ara’s success could depend on the modular parts available, and the ability to mass produce those components in time.

How it will work; Ara phones are going to be built using modules inserted into metal endoskeletal frames known as “endos”. The endos will be the only component in an Ara phone made by Google. It acts as the switch to the on-device network linking all the modules together. You can then upgrade your phone by changing the modules connected to it and viola; you have a new powerful phone.

You Decide What Is In Your Phone

This is a great idea as you spend less to keep a new phone, you can decide to change the screen, or the processor, the battery or all of it without buying the whole phone. If it is ever commercial, it is the best idea ever! Gone will be the days of losing that phone case you are sentimental to because a newer model of your phone is out. You will be able to hold on to your “old-new” phone until it actually gives up or you decide to change it yourself, not forced to.

Your Wrists Are About To Get Smarter

Ever heard the word smartwatch? You should, as big tech companies like google, Samsung, LG, Motorola all think this is the next big thing. How did I come to this ? They have been spending millions to make them and market them to get them into our homes and on everybody’s arm.

What are smartwatches? They are watches that do more than tell the time, they do more like answer your call, listen for your voice commands, display the weather and much more. With the new system Google recently announced, they can even control your TV or order that sweet pizza within minutes.

Google recently announced amidst other announcements that they have developed Android Wear, an official android version that will go on these smartwatches. Android is a system that runs on many smartphones. If you download your apps from the Play Store, then your phone definitely runs android.

Any need for these smartwatches I hear you ask? Well I’d say it depends on how much you would like to use your watch to do most things your phone can do already. In fact most of the smartwatches out today like the LG’s G watch (£159), Samsung Gear Live (£169) need you to have a smartphone running android before they can function fully. But all is not useless in the land of smartwatches, as you can quickly view appointments, check your text messages or see who is calling you on your watch while your phone is tucked away, if that is something you’d like. Might be very useful in UK where there is a lot of rainfall.

I should add, Apple (Iphone) users should not feel left out as Apple has been rumoured to have its own smartwatch in the works. Stay tuned as we will be bringing you news on that if they are any different from the android counterparts.

Conclusion: Smartwatches might not take over your life like smartphones have done in the past years, but there is definitely potential for the smartwatches as they would make life easier for those of us who prefer not to bring their phones out in public or those of us who like quick access to text messages and features that you would access on the phone. As for me, until the smartwatch can do what my phone cannot do, I won’t be spending £170 on a smartwatch.
